Photography

One of my biggest passions is photography, albeit film or digital there is something about it that I love. It is the silence of a photograph, it is it’s ability to tell a story, its ability to change perception and its ability to evoke emotion. Albert Camus once said to talk about something you love is to talk about it with no real specific objectivity. That is certainly true, I can’t explain why I love photography or why I love the person I do. I just do!

My tools of the trade are a Nikon dSLR, and a rather rubbish Sigma lens. I use a rubbish Sigma lens so I don’t have to worry too much about it getting damaged. It lets me concentrate on the task in hand with out thinking that I have several thousand pounds worth of optical equipment in my paws. It provides a more seamless relationship between myself and the camera. It is also of course cheaper to replace. Should I earn some pennies, enough to buy a lens, I will upgrade my glass.

Other than my dSLR I also have a traditional 35mm Praktica SLR with a good selection of Carl Zeiss lenses. However due to the expense and hassle of developing it rarely sees use these days. So instead I’ll stick with my Nikon dSLR.

Some of my work has been published in the Guardian and won awards, this of course pleases me, but what really pleases me is when someone likes one of my photographs enough to actually want to own it! I get a tremendous amount of satisfaction out of knowing someone likes one of ‘creations’ enough to actually own it.

I used to be employed as a Graphic Designer, have a house, and a good steady income, and I gave it all up. Mainly because I wanted to be closer to a girl I love(d) very much and move to London. This in someways was a mistake. London is saturated with Graphic Designers… but very few photographers. So it is my aim, hope, dream to make a living however modest from Photography. If it doesn’t happen soon I’m just going to submit to the ‘man’, save up some money and move to Spain and become a photographer. I am not bothered if I don’t earn a fortune. I merely want to spend the rest of my life taking photographs. It is something that I will never tire of.

Much of my photography seems to be Street Photography, however I do indulge in other kinds of photography from conceptual, abstract, arty farty stuff to more boring portraits. Ideally I’d love to become a photojournalist and use my skills (ha!), to change people’s opinions or raise awareness in conflict zones and the developing world. I will do it. I have to do it! I hope my ambition never leaves me even if I am finding it very difficult.
